Detailed Itinerary
Begin your journey by arriving in Bogota, Colombia’s bustling capital. From there, take a domestic flight to Pitalito, a gateway to the Andean region. Upon landing, enjoy a scenic transfer through lush, rolling landscapes to San Agustin, home to one of South America’s most important archaeological sites. This journey offers an immersive experience that transitions from Bogota’s urban energy to the serene beauty of Colombia’s historic heart. San Agustin is an archaeological treasure and one of Colombia’s most significant sites, offering a unique glimpse into ancient history with pre-Columbian statues, tombs, and temples dating back up to 5,000 years. Nestled in verdant forests, it also serves as a gateway to the southern Andes, with breathtaking waterfalls and the spectacular Magdalena River, which narrows to just two meters.

Today we will explore the surroundings of San Agustin, starting with the “Estrecho del Rio Magdalena,” where the mighty Magdalena River, which originates in Purace National Park, narrows to just 2.2 meters after 70 km. Here, the clear waters flow through a narrow rock channel, allowing you to see the river’s sandy bed below. The surrounding landscape is particularly picturesque. We will then visit the nearby village of Obando to see tombs similar to those in the Tierradentro Archaeological Park and explore a small archaeological museum. Next, we will head to the Alto de los Ídolos Park, known for its high concentration of tombs and statues, second only to the San Agustin Archaeological Park. We will continue to Alto de las Piedras to see the intriguing “Double Being” statue. Before returning to San Agustin, we will stop at Salto del Mortiño, an impressive waterfall nearly 200 meters high. Note: The archaeological parks of Alto de los Ídolos and Alto de las Piedras in Isnos are closed every Wednesday of the month.
