We’ll take a direct flight from Bogota to Neiva for our next adventure. Upon arrival, we’ll head to the impressive Tatacoa Desert, the second-largest arid region in Colombia after the La Guajira Peninsula. Here, we’ll have the opportunity to walk along two trails through renowned sectors of this tropical dry forest: the Cuzco Trail, known for its distinctive ochre tones, and the Los Hoyos Trail, where the landscape dramatically shifts to gray hues, offering breathtaking panoramic views. As we progress along the trails, we’ll pause for short walks (approximately 20 minutes each) to admire the unique formations shaped by water and wind, locally known as the cathedrals, the tower, the wishing tree, and the labyrinths. We’ll also observe the distinctive vegetation of this ecosystem. In the late afternoon, we’ll visit the Tatacoa Desert Astronomical Observatory, accompanied by an English-speaking guide. Thanks to its clear skies, lack of light pollution, and proximity to the equator, the Tatacoa Desert is an exceptional place to observe stars and constellations. The surrounding landscape adds a special, almost poetic quality to the experience. As night falls, we’ll relax on the desert floor, gazing at the stars while enjoying an engaging and entertaining astronomy talk led by the guide. Then, we’ll have the chance to view various celestial bodies through the observatory’s telescopes and capture incredible photographs. Finally, we’ll return to Neiva to rest after a long day.
