Snorkeling and Diving in Galapagos

The Galapagos Marine Reserve is located 1,000 kilometers from mainland Ecuador and was officially established in 1998. In 2001, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On January 14, 2022, it was expanded to its current size of 198,000 km², making it the second-largest reserve in the world, created to protect its unique biodiversity, including key migratory routes of iconic species such as hammerhead sharks, sea turtles, giant whale sharks, and manta rays. The islands’ strategic location at the convergence of several ocean currents creates a mix of cold and warm waters which, along with an incredible abundance of plankton, has enabled the arrival and settlement of species from different areas of the Pacific Ocean. This makes the reserve a vital marine sanctuary, home to nearly 3,000 marine species including dolphins, sea lions, fur seals, and even penguins.

In certain areas of the Galapagos Marine Reserve, visitors can dive or snorkel and encounter a wide variety of aquatic species living underwater—from small, colorful tropical fish to large marine mammals. The most unique species in the Galapagos is the marine iguana, due to its amphibious nature. It is the only known lizard that can feed both in the water and on land. While most tours include snorkeling activities near the islands, divers in the Galapagos can choose between liveaboard diving cruises and daily dive tours. Liveaboard cruises are the only way to access Darwin and Wolf due to their remote location, and they are suitable only for experienced divers. Daily dive tours offer a wide range of routes with varying levels of difficulty.

Why choose Galapagos Cruises?

Vacationing in the Galapagos Islands is a unique opportunity to observe and experience animals in their natural habitat. Here, you’ll have the chance to: swim with playful sea lions, relax near the giant Galapagos tortoises, enjoy the deep blue sea, watch the friendly iguanas, and take part in other exciting activities. Discover the wildlife of Galapagos on a cruise.

The Galapagos Islands, located in Ecuador, are considered an exclusive and off-the-beaten-path travel option. To help you prepare for this exciting adventure, we provide information about travel on the islands, their flora and fauna, history and climate, as well as flights, a recommended packing list, travel plan, and the national park rules.

Some reasons to take your trip

VISIT A UNIQUE PLACE

The Galapagos are known as the “Enchanted Islands” due to their remote location. Historically, a 1589 map by Ortelius described them as islands that appear and disappear as if by magic—a phenomenon attributed to shifting ocean currents. This isolation has allowed the flora and fauna of the Galapagos to evolve without human interference, resulting in a pristine environment. Here, you can get close to the animals, as they have been isolated for millennia without natural predators.

CUSTOMIZED TRIP

Your trip to the Galapagos will be a wonderful opportunity to explore the islands’ abundant flora and fauna alongside your local guide. Swim and dive in the Pacific Ocean. You’ll discover a whole new world of tropical marine wildlife in the Galapagos Marine Reserve. With a bit of luck, you’ll be swimming just a few meters from a sea turtle—or even one of the playful sea lions. Enjoy a comfortable stay in cozy hotels on one or more of the islands, with excursions to the Galapagos National Park and the marine reserve. The park’s trained guides will share their knowledge of the islands’ ecosystem and lead you to the best spots for wildlife encounters. You can choose from organized programs with fixed group departures or create your own itinerary with a mix of tours and free days, tailored to your preferences.

FIRST CLASS EXPERIENCE

A cruise to the Galapagos is undoubtedly the most popular and highly recommended way to visit the Galapagos Islands. You can sail aboard one of the comfortable yachts to visit a greater variety of islands and see a much wider diversity of wildlife. In fact, it’s the only possible way to reach some of the more remote islands. To ensure you find the right cruise in the Galapagos, we warmly invite you to explore our wide selection of over 50 yachts, sailboats, and Galapagos cruises. After the cruise, enjoy a few extra days on the islands—whether to relax on the beaches or to continue exploring Galapagos on a personalized tour.
